What is a Reversing Valve?

Modified on Tue, 28 Mar, 2023 at 11:16 AM

A water source heat pump (WSHP) reversing valve is a component that is used to reverse the flow of refrigerant through the heat pump's system. The reversing valve allows the heat pump to provide both heating and cooling functions by switching the direction of the refrigerant flow.

During the cooling mode, the refrigerant flows through the evaporator coil, which absorbs heat from the air, and then through the compressor, which increases the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant. The refrigerant then flows through the condenser coil, where it releases the heat to the surrounding water loop.

During the heating mode, the reversing valve switches the flow of the refrigerant, so that it flows in the opposite direction. The refrigerant now flows through the condenser coil, where it absorbs heat from the surrounding water loop, and then through the compressor, which increases the temperature of the refrigerant. The refrigerant then flows through the evaporator coil, where it releases the heat to the surrounding air.

The WSHP reversing valve is controlled by the thermostat, which signals the heat pump to switch between heating and cooling modes. Without the reversing valve, the heat pump would only be able to provide either heating or cooling, but not both.
