Should I use a Pleated Filter for my Heat Pump System?

Using an air filter with a MERV rating higher than what the manufacturer recommends can actually impair its performance.

The smaller pores in more highly rated air filters create resistance to airflow, and if the filter is used in an HVAC system that is not designed to handle this resistance, such as a Heat Pump system, it can lower the system's efficiency, decrease indoor air quality, and put a strain on the system's fan.

Most Heat Pump manufacturers recommend using Pleated filters rated between MERV 8 to MERV 11 as they will provide optimal filtration but will require more frequent filter changes (every 1 - 2 months. Higher-rated 1- inch filters (MERV 12, 13+) may reduce airflow and affect unit heating and cooling performance

If Pleated filters are used for a Heat pump, they should be replaced every 1 - 2 months, as clogged filters can cause damage to the Heat Pump system. Pleated filters get clogged much more quickly than Poly wire filters. Customers with pets or near construction zones should replace a Pleated filter every month.
